You’ve probably heard the phrase “viral marketing.” If you’re unsure what it means, it is word of mouth taken to the nth degree by having people spread the word quickly and effectively about a particular subject.
Remember those flash mobs from a few years back? Well, those were a result of viral marketing. Someone put the word out via social media about an action they wanted done Before you knew it, a whole mob of people were at the appointed place at the appointed time ready to complete the appointed task.
It’s taking the power of people spreading the word to publicize an event or an item. While viral marketing is now mostly attributed to social media efforts, that whole "you tell two people and they each tell two people and they each tell two people and so on..." is also viral marketing. As long as people are interested enough to spread the word by voice, forwarding an e-mail or sharing a post on social media, you've got the beginnings of a successful viral marketing campaign.
